Evan F. Cromwell, Ph.D. - Founder, President
Dr. Cromwell has over 20 years of senior executive and technical experience in the design, development and manufacture of laser systems. He has developed numerous laser systems for materials characterization, optical inspection, and laser processing. He has held key positions at IBM, StorMedia, Citron Technology Group and Toda Citron Technologies. At StorMedia, Dr. Cromwell was responsible for development of Laser Texture process and the transfer of that technology to high volume manufacturing. At Citron he directed technology development efforts and helped raise over $20M in funding to commercialize microdisk recording media and associated process equipment a joint venture with Toda Kogyo of Japan (Toda Citron Technologies). He is the author of over 30 papers and presentations and holds 7 patents. Prior to founding Blueshift he was the CTO of Toda Citron Technologies and is currently President of Innovative Laser Solutions. Chris Shumate, Ph.D. - Founder, Vice President Sales and Marketing
Dr. Shumate has spent over 19 years in development, applications, marketing, and sales of analytical equipment with the majority of that time concentrated in biotechnology applications. He has held key technology and management positions at several start-up as well as more established companies such as Hamilton, Sagian, Aurora Biosciences, and Cytokinetics. Prior to co-founding Blueshift Biotechnologies, he co-founded CytoPrint, which was acquired by Atto Biosciences, now part of BD Biosciences. He has a large breadth of knowledge of the industry and the requirements of successful instrumentation. He has had over 35 publications and presentations and holds five patents. Paul B. Comita, Ph.D. - Founder, Vice President Technology
Dr. Comita has over 25 years of experience in research, development, and senior technical leadership in the Data Storage, Flat Panel Display, Semiconductor, and Analytical Instrumentation industries. He has significant experience in laser and optical instrumentation and in developing commercial applications on these platforms. Prior to co-founding Blueshift Biotechnologies, he was a Director of Engineering and Technology at Applied Materials, and led multi-million dollar technology development programs in the Silicon Epitaxy Division. He has been active in the technical community and has authored over 40 articles, including 5 book chapters, has given over 30 national and international presentations, and holds 48 issued patents. Steven Miller, Ph.D. - Vice President Biology
Dr. Miller has over 20 years of broad science and management experience in the discovery and development of biopharmaceuticals, antibodies, and novel cell analyses technologies. He was most recently Chief Science Officer with Labcyte, LLC, a laboratory automation instrument and consumables provider. At Abgenix, he led a group in Assay Development responsible for implementing new technology platforms to accelerate the discovery of human antibody therapeutics. Prior to this, he was Director of Scientific Affairs and Applications Support for Biometric Imaging where he managed scientific marketing evaluations of a novel laser scanning microvolume cytometer for FDA-cleared diagnostic applications. At SRI International he was Director of the Signal Transduction Program. He has published over 49 papers and abstracts. Education: NIH Postdoctoral Fellow, 1986, Stanford University School of Medicine; Ph.D. in microbiology/cell biology, 1983, University of Kansas School of Medicine; B.G.S. in biochemistry, 1976, University of Kansas.
Joseph Fernandez, - Board Member
Mr. Fernandez was one of two co-founders of Invitrogen, Inc., a molecular biology company headquartered in Carlsbad, California. He developed and helped launch the company's first commercial products and was pivotal in licensing, R&D, operations, business development and marketing. As a member of the senior management team for over ten years, he helped build Invitrogen into the leading worldwide supplier of molecular biology tools for cloning and expression. Mr. Fernandez left Invitrogen after their Nasdaq IPO in 1999. That same year, Mr. Fernandez founded Active Motif, which specializes in novel tools and platform technologies for genomics-driven cell biology and pathway elucidation. Mr. Fernandez received his undergraduate degree from Hiram College in Ohio where he also pursued post-graduate work. Mr. Fernandez is the author of a number of scientific papers, patents and has edited chapters in several molecular biology textbooks.
Dr. Hong Jen Chang, MD, MPH, MS
Dr. Hong Jen Chang is currently the President & CEO of Taiwan Global BioFund (TGB). Before joining the Fund, Dr. Chang has extensive experience in health care. During his 16 years service with the government, he held several important positions such as Deputy Minister of health, President & CEO of Bureau of National Health Insurance (BNHI), Director General of Center of Disease Control, and Deputy Director of the Bureau of Pharmaceutical Affairs.
Dr. Chang is known for his expertise in Health care financing, Disease Control, Biotech and pharmaceutical industry, and Health information systems. Dr. Chang now sits in a couple of Biotech companies and serves as senior advisor to Taiwan's CDC. Chang also teaches at National Yang Ming University, which he is currently adjunct professor of the Institute of Public Health.
Dr. Chang received his medical degree from the National Yang-Ming Medical College; he also holds a Master of Public Health degree from the National Taiwan University, and a Master of Science in Health Policy and Management from Harvard School of Public Health.
